 “Otherwise capable”

Published on 07.03.2024

06/03/2024 : Anyone with a disability, visible or non-visible, temporary or definitive, should be given the opportunity to follow a lifesaving skills course. For many years, the Monaco Red Cross has been keen to make training courses available to “otherwise capable” individuals, with the same training goals as for an able-bodied person.

CRM instructors have acquired specific techniques (including the hands-on learning technique) and given thought to the adjustments necessary to be able to teach various types of audience (visually impaired, hearing impaired…). Adaptability, professionalism, kindness and a listening ear – instructors ensure that the course is tailored to the abilities of each individual.

The first session of CRM’s “Otherwise Capable” training course stems from a meeting in 2019 with the Monaco Motor Disability Association (AMHM) during World First Aid Day. Contrary to a “classical” course, this one consists of 6 three-hour sessions due to the level of fatigue experienced by the participants when having to concentrate continuously. Theoretical training alternated with practical exercises were set up for the 3 participants and their carers. Even though they were shy at the beginning, the trainees very quickly got involved; invested and engaged, they all obtained their diploma by validating all the learning goals.

A meeting was conducted with Monaco’s Office of Social Affairs and Health, which resulted in 8 Monegasque associations being contacted in order to create awareness of the need to make first aid training accessible to all individuals with a disability.

CRM is ready to take on board further “otherwise capable” individuals who would like to enrol in a lifesaving skills course.
