NIGER: Renovation of a generator for the Niamey Hospital
Context
Power shortages are many in Niamey, Niger, especially before the rainy season. A surgical team from Monaco carries out orthopaedic missions on site under the aegis of the Monegasque Red Cross. Several times surgeons had to complete their surgeries with a head lamp because the surgical block was no longer being supplied with power.
A property agent from Monaco offered the Monegasque Red Cross a generator, taken from a building. Then the Red Cross called upon teachers of the technical secondary school of Monte-Carlo to decide whether it could be envisaged to have it repaired by the pupils, then put it in the Niamey National Hospital.
Objectives
- To reinforce the capacities of a health institution and enable patients to be treated correctly.
- To involve Monaco youngsters in a solidarity project based on their technical skills.
Results obtained
- Sixth year high school pupils and seventh year electrical engineering pupils sanded, stripped, painted and cabled this generator, then they built the control chest;
- A mission to set up the operation and provide maintenance training has been carried out in Niamey by members of the Red Cross and high school pupils involved in this project, so that the whole generator could be started;
- Two other local generators took advantage of the team’s expertise during this mission and were repaired.
The motivation of the young volunteers has remained unfailing. The work done by these Monaco youngsters and their involvement in this project, both educational and humanitarian, after these long months of efforts, has produced results that fill them with pride.
