  • Multi-purpose training centre in Loumbila

The Monaco Pavilion designed for the 2015 Universal Expo in Milan has been completely redeployed at the heart of a fully self-sufficient sustainable development project for the benefit of the Burkina Faso Red Cross.

The purpose of the multi-purpose training centre in Loumbila is to offer first-aid training for the West African sub-region and vocational training in the hotel and catering sector. By making its facilities available the centre will also generate income in order to enable the Burkina Faso Red Cross to address humanitarian challenges in the country.

The 6.5 hectare complex will consist of the converted pavilion, accommodation, conference rooms, a restaurant area, sports fields, a water rescue centre, a vegetable plot and a photovoltaic field.

Beneficiaries: Burkina Faso Red Cross, West African National Societies, youth in vocational training, youth (swimming lessons), women’s associations (market gardening project)

  • Community health: access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation

According to WHO, currently one third of the world population still has no access to improved sanitation services. Our action is aimed at reducing sanitary risks and improving people’s living conditions. With the communities, we promote access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation by setting up appropriate local infrastructure, training and awareness programmes in order to obtain a sustainable impact.

Beneficiaries: 5000 people (714 families)

Location: Youga, Boulgou Province*

  • Education and Protection of young female carers:

In Burkina Faso’s large cities, like elsewhere in West Africa, it is estimated that 2/3 of urban families use child labour to carry out household chores. The domestic employment of children is one of the main causes of de-schooling and rural exodus. For over 6 years, we have been carrying out, together with the Burkina Faso Red Cross in child departure and arrival areas, protection, education and awareness efforts.

Beneficiaries: 740 young girls every year

Location: Ouagadougou, Bobo Dioulasso and the Poni Province

  • Orthopaedic surgery missions

A voluntary orthopaedic medical team, alongside the Burkina Faso medical teams, is carrying out two surgical missions in order to operate on patients suffering from sickle cell disease and train their Burkina Faso colleagues. The missions began in Niger and Senegal and are currently continuing in Burkina Faso.

Beneficiaries: patients suffering from sickle cell disease in Burkina Faso (over 559 people have received surgery for orthopaedic conditions since 2001 in West Africa).

Location: Ouagadougou

  • Food security:

As a continuation of the emergency aid provided to the Sahelian populations following the severe food crisis in 2012, the Monaco Red Cross and the Burkina Faso Red Cross are pursuing their cooperation to improve access to a sufficient amount of varied and adequate food for highly vulnerable families. This is being achieved thanks to the implementation of viable farming and market gardening activities and herd reconstitution.

Beneficiaries: 3800 people (470 families)

Location: Arbinda and Koutougou, Province of Soum (Sahel)

  • First Aid

Our training initiatives in « life-saving techniques » and the capacity building of the National Societies (NS) have increased the number of voluntary rescue workers in order to address emergencies. We also help these NS to become financially independent thanks to the implementation of first aid access programmes in companies. The Monaco Red Cross’s know-how has been recognised by the International Red Cross Committee and a partnership agreement signed between the two entities in order to extend this expertise to all National Societies in North and West Africa.
