Monaco – USA: a donation for the Red Cross

The American Aid Association of the French Riviera handed over this week a donation amounting to €100,000 to the Monaco Red Cross for its social work and youth outreach, thus strengthening the historically extremely strong ties between the Principality and the United States of America.

Monaco, 23/09/2019 – Mr Peter Murphy, President of the American Aid Association of the French Riviera, accompanied by the Vice-President, Ms Merrily Lustig-Tornatore, were received by Mr Frédéric Platini, Secretary General of the Monaco Red Cross, at the organisation’s head office in Monaco.

On this occasion, Mr Murphy presented a donation amounting to over 100,000 Euros to the Monaco Red Cross, aimed at helping American citizens, either residents or individuals visiting Monaco, in a state of distress.

The funds will also be used to promote educational and cultural exchanges between young Monegasques and Americans.

The American Aid Association of the French RIviera, established in 1948, helps American citizens who are hospitalised, residents of a retirement home, in prison or facing temporary financial hardship.

The late Princess Grace of Monaco worked with the Association for many years, helping Americans in distress in the Principality.

The association was funded originally by several American residents who made personal donations, as well as a fundraising event on the occasion of American Thanksgiving Day.

Following the departure of the US Navy’s 6^th fleet from its home port in Villefranche sur Mer, the Anglo-American premises (formerly the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital) was sold, and the proceeds of the sale were divided between the American and British funds of the respective associations.

The association was recently dissolved. Part of the remaining funds has been donated to the Monaco Red Cross and to Riviera Lifeline, an organisation which helps the elderly on the French Riviera.
